Two Pears Still Life -- Pencil

This is my first shaded pencil pear sketch. I have wanted to do some pears for a while, but could not find anything to sketch.  When I finally found some pears to sketch, I found I could not duplicate all the details into my picture. In the original oil painting there were a lot more highlights, but for some reason I could not get that many to work in my sketch.  Either the difference is in the medium, or the artist. Other than that, I had a lot of fun doing this sketch.  I got to stretch a lot, as I learned more about sketching fruit.  The inspiration for this came from the oil painting 'Pears' by Ann Thompson Nemcosky. You can see the original here. Her painting was so beautiful that it made me want to sketch it. I also asked and received her permission to post my sketch.

  1. Well, I think you did a fabulous job drawing these pears! The difference in the highlights is probably just because you left the background behind the pears white. If it was very dark like the painting then your highlights would contrast more. As it is I think they work perfectly. Well done!

  2. gotta love the tones here! =) They are beautifully drawn Ramona. I would agree with Ann's comment above. If you'd like to make them more realistic in someway, you could go lighter on the outlines of the pears and let the tones dissolve. And the add the darker background to bring the highlights ^^

  3. Great job with the values! That's the difficult part to see when sketching colour, I think.

  6. I agree with Ann and Alex - a darker background would alter very much how you see the values in the pears and you would find the highlights would look more natural - background is hugely important to an image. And well done you!

  7. Nothing much more I can add to the comments already made just to agree that the shading on these pears is very good, and the little highlights... did you use an eraser for those?

  8. Oh, I loved Ann's painting of the pears too! You've done a great job on it! And I learn so much sometimes by just reading the comments--I would never have thought of the background changing the effects of the highlights!

  11. It looks terrific. Now the challenge is to draw a couple of pears from life. Last time I painted some I had to finally take a picture of my pears because they were ripening before I was getting the painting done so it ended up that I used the picture to paint from. So much for my drawing from life!
